Flower Care
BloombyBunches Flower Care Guide
Help Your Flowers Hydrate, Open & Last Longer
Your fresh flowers have taken a journey from the farm to your door and need just a little care to bloom beautifully. Follow the guide below to help your flowers hydrate properly, open well, and last their longest.
General Flower Care
Step-by-Step Instructions- Unbox Immediately: Flowers are perishable. Remove them from the shipping box within 1 hour of delivery and do not leave them boxed overnight.
- Hydrate Right Away: Recut stems at a 45° angle under clean water and place them in clean, room-temperature water immediately. Use flower food if provided.
- Sanitize Everything: Use clean buckets, vases, and tools. Leftover soap residue or bacteria can shorten vase life.
- Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Any leaves sitting in water will create bacteria and reduce flower life.
- Keep Flowers Cool: Store away from direct sunlight, heaters, fruit bowls, and strong drafts.
- Let Them Rest: Allow flowers to hydrate in water for at least 4–6 hours before arranging. Some varieties may need overnight hydration.
Roses
Care Tips- Keep roses in their protective cardboard sleeve for the first hour of hydration so they drink upright.
- After 1 hour, remove wrapping and guard petals. Discolored outer petals are normal and protect the bloom during shipping.
- Use one bucket per bunch so roses have enough space to hydrate evenly and open fully.
- Opening too slowly? Place in a warm room or near indirect sunlight. You can also gently spin the rose upside down between your palms to encourage opening.
- Opening too fast? Move roses to a cooler area to slow them down.
Hydrangea
Care Tips- Hydrangeas are heavy drinkers, so check water levels daily and refill often.
- Remove all plastic or netting right away after unpacking.
- If blooms look wilted, give stems a deep fresh cut of 2 inches or more and submerge the entire flower head in cool water for 30 minutes.
- Hydrangeas are not ideal for foam installations unless added shortly before the event.
Scabiosa
Care Tips- Scabiosa stems are delicate and benefit from support. If plastic straws are provided, leave them on.
- If no support is provided, use a tall vase.
- Keep away from direct sun and heat, which can shorten vase life.
- Buds that do not open can still add beautiful texture to arrangements.
Peonies
Care Tips- If peonies are closed, gently peel away 2–3 outer petals and place them in warm water or a warm room to encourage opening.
- Hydrate peonies in their own vase whenever possible to avoid bruising their delicate petals.
- Coral varieties open quickly, so refrigerate once they reach your preferred stage.
Anemones
Care Tips- Anemones are delicate and do best in a separate vase.
- Light bruising or petal spotting is normal and often not noticeable in finished designs.
- Some stem breakage may happen in transit, so expect a few losses per bunch.
- Use lukewarm water to encourage opening, then refrigerate after opening to extend vase life.
Ranunculus
Care Tips- Ranunculus blooms are top-heavy and may need floral wire support.
- Keep them in a short vase, no higher than the bloom head, to help prevent drooping.
- Place in a bright area with indirect sunlight to encourage opening.
Carnations & Mini Carnations
Care Tips- Carnations are extremely hardy and ideal for event work.
- If blooms feel too tight, gently fluff petals open with your fingers.
- Lower blooms can be removed and used in boutonnieres, corsages, or small arrangements.
- If a stem snaps, it can still be used for cake flowers or corsages.
Greenery
Care Tips- Give each stem a fresh cut and remove any foliage that will sit below the water line.
- Minor blemishes or small insect holes can occur naturally and usually do not show in finished designs.
- Loose greenery can be stored in plastic bags in the fridge for up to 2 days before your event.
Refrigeration Guidelines
- Fridge Temperature: Set your fridge to the warmest setting, ideally around 4°C / 40°F.
- Avoid Freezing: Keep flowers away from fridge walls and vents.
- Remove Produce: Fruits and vegetables release ethylene gas, which speeds up aging.
- Only Refrigerate If Needed: Many flowers do best in a cool room rather than a cold fridge.
Reminder: Expect 5–10% Stem Loss
Flowers are a natural product. A small percentage of stems may arrive damaged, may not hydrate properly, or may not meet design quality standards. This is normal and reflected in wholesale pricing. These stems are often still useful for practice work or filler designs.
